Before the advent of 'tubes', the size of salmon flies was limited by the size of hooks and just making the hook shank longer and the bends bigger increased the leverage and thus the chance of the hook bending or breaking.
Waddington Shanks were thus designed and developed as a way to create the bigger, longer salmon flies required on bigger rivers.. and they can be used with virtualy any size of treble hooks.
Thus it is possible to tie long salmon flies with a small treble which disguises the hook much better.
Waddington Shanks are also widely used with single hooks by many old hands.
